Every year, a large share of MOT failures in the UK come down to a small handful of avoidable issues — faults that would have taken minutes to fix beforehand but mean a failed test, a second booking, and in some cases a car that isn't legally driveable in the meantime.
The most common MOT failure points
- Lighting and signalling — a single blown bulb is one of the most frequent fail reasons, and one of the cheapest to fix in advance.
- Tyres — tread depth below the legal minimum (1.6mm across the central three-quarters), damage, or incorrect pressure.
- Brakes — worn pads, discs, or an imbalance between brakes on either side of the vehicle.
- Suspension — worn shock absorbers, bushings, or ball joints, often only noticeable under the inspection rig.
- Windscreen and wipers — chips in the driver's line of sight (a 10mm chip in the critical zone is enough to fail), and wiper blades that don't clear the screen properly.
- Fluid leaks and emissions — visible leaks or emissions outside the legal limit, more common in older or poorly maintained engines.
Why a pre-MOT check is worth it
A pre-MOT inspection isn't the same as the test itself — it's a check against the same failure points by someone who knows what the tester will be looking for, done with enough time to actually fix anything found before the real test. Catching a bulb, a low tyre, or a brake imbalance beforehand turns a two-visit, two-fee process into one.
What a mobile pre-MOT check can and can't do
A mobile mechanic can check and fix the vast majority of common failure points at your location — bulbs, wipers, fluid levels, visible tyre condition, brake pad wear, and general roadworthiness items. What it can't replace is the test itself, which has to happen at a licensed MOT test centre with the correct equipment for emissions and brake-force testing. Think of a pre-MOT visit as removing the easily avoidable fail reasons before the car goes for its actual test.
Timing it right
Booking a pre-MOT check around one to two weeks before the actual test date gives enough time to source and fit any parts that turn out to be needed, without the check being so far in advance that a new issue develops in the gap.
